Children, Young People and parents really want to see an indoor skatepark in Darlington and through a link with Darlington Gymnastics we have found a warehouse on Faverdale Industrial Estate that is big enough for both groups.
In March 2013 we got planning permission approval and we hope to have the lease signed at the end of July/ early August 2013. The part for the skatepark is 20,000sqft and will also have a cafe that will be shared with the gymnastics club.
We held a weekend event in the building in December 2012 and had 244 young people come along, and all wanted to see an indoor facility locally. We don’t have all the funds we need to build the whole park yet, so we will start small and through grants, loans and donations raise the money to build the park probably in two or three phases.
We have a group of 21 young people that have been involved so far visiting other parks to get ideas and are in the process of selecting a ramp company to design the park with the young people. Our aim is for young people to be involved in all parts of developing and running the park. Once the lease is signed and insurances all in place we hope to have the building open on a regular basis with just a few ramps in initially. It will give us a base to develop the project from and for more people to get involved.
Check our our gallery page to see some pictures of December’s weekend event.
Work has now started on building the ramps, check out the new page for updates. While work has started we are still raising the final funds we need. So far we have raised £85,000 and need to find a further £15,000 to get the park up and running. If you can help in any way please get intouch with Nigel Potter 07985 468606 or via the contact page.
